Background: Village midwives in Indonesia is able to reduce infant and maternal mortality. Decline in infant and maternal mortality rates could be felt in rural areas because the midwife is able to improve the environmental condition that supports the process of birth. The presence of village midwives can improve prenatal care, better birth, early detection of possible complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Target of Research: Knowing the relationship between village midwives in the village of standby with the number of maternal mortality and infant in Sleman District.

Research method: This study is a descriptive analytic cross sectional study design using secondary data. The subject of this research is that there are 86 prepared village in Sleman district. Statistical analysis was used in the form of descriptive univariate analisis in the form of percentages and bivariate analysis using Pearson Product Moment correlation at α = 0.05.

Result of research: Of the 86 villages located on standby in Sleman regency Year 2009 showed a majority of villages have a midwife on standby as many as 82 villages (93.5%). The majority of standby villages in Sleman regency have lower maternal mortality in the target districts of Sleman (≤ 150 mother/100.000 live births) that as many as 80 villages (93.0%) and the majority of prepared villages in Sleman regency have infant mortality below the target of Sleman Regency (≤ 58 child/1000 live births) is consist of 85 villages (98.8%).

Conclusion: There is a relationship between maternal mortality by village midwives (p value = 0.001) and there is a relationship between infant mortality in village midwives (p value = 0.001).
